In our fourth DataVizards post we will introduce Črtomir Just, a graphic designer and 3D artist from Slovenia. He mostly creates digital and print designs for his clients, but we’re gonna focus on (what seems to be) his only dataviz project… so far.
Dataviz meets science
The description of the project is so good that I’m just gonna leave it here: “The goal was to find and visualise the differences in people’s responses to music that they heard for the first time. Using the WhiteBox EEG platform, 20 volunteers’ brainwaves were measured while they listened to a musical piece made especially for this occasion by kleemar. This all happened in a black box, where the subjects were deprived of all senses except hearing. We concentrated on visualising the two most significant and scientifically explainable measures – focus and flow. Focus tells us how concentrated a person is and flow is the degree to which one is immersed in the music. The results were visualised in the form of B1 posters and exhibited, while each of the participants got to take one copy home as a personalised image of their brain.”
Blackbox – a company focused on applied neuroscience and brain imaging technology – provided the technology and the tools while the two designers created a set of stylish infographics posters. BlackBox used its core product (WhiteBox EEG Platform) for the project. It is claimed to be the „world’s first mobile, scalable, multipurpose, easy to use EEG recording and analysis platform” and is used in exciting fields such as medicine, consumer neuroscience and art. If you’re interested what else they use this product for, click here (hint: it can help in large scale early detection of Alzheimer’s disease or transforming emotions into data).
You can see the posters below:
You can also listen to the song the participants listened to – which I didn’t like at all. I wonder if that’s just me, or the song is kinda terrible?
We will continue our DataVizards series. If you know anyone around Hungary whose dataviz work you adore, please let us know in the comments!
